LSI Logic Sponsors 19TH Annual Kansas Science Olympiad
Company provides scholarships and event support to statewide competition
Wichita, Kansas (March 20, 2006) - LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI) announced its sponsorship of the April 1 Kansas Science Olympiad, marking its fifteenth consecutive year of involvement with the program. Held this year at Wichita State University, this statewide interscholastic competition challenges junior and high school teams to demonstrate their knowledge, ability and skills in all areas of science.
As a major corporate sponsor of the event, LSI contributed $10,000 to the program and is providing two $1,000 academic scholarships to students who intend to pursue an undergraduate degree in science at a local university. Approximately 30 middle schools, 30 high schools and 900 students from Kansas will compete at the Kansas Science Olympiad.
The mission of Science Olympiad, an international non-profit organization, is to improve the quality of science education, increase student interest in science and provide recognition to students and teachers for outstanding achievements in science. The competition encourages participants to solve problems by using various science disciplines including biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology.
“By participating in Science Olympiad, students have an opportunity to explore, create and learn,” said Cindy Hoover, site manager and director of operations program management, Engenio Storage Group, LSI Logic. “Competitions such as Science Olympiad enable young people to harness their natural curiosity and discover new ways of tackling problems. The critical thinking skills, teamwork and camaraderie developed through participation in Science Olympiad can inspire a new generation of scientists and engineers.”
The February 2006 report, Rising Above The Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future, determined that without high-quality jobs and innovative companies developing new technologies, the U.S. economy and quality of life will suffer. The report, commissioned by the Committee on Science, Engineering and Public Policy, indicates that leading scientific and engineering breakthroughs are being accomplished throughout the world, while at the same time, the number of U.S. scientists and engineers is declining.
LSI focuses its grants on programs that directly benefit students and improve education in the communities where company facilities are located. Additionally, LSI routinely donates its used equipment and computers to area schools and colleges, and company employees serve as mentors, tutors and school volunteers.
In the greater Wichita area, LSI supports a number of charitable organizations and events, including: Kansas BEST, American Red Cross, Relay for Life, Race for the Cure, Special Olympics, United Way, Junior Achievement and Strong Kids.
