LSI Logic Announces Comprehensive Serial Attached SCSI Product Plans
- Controller ICs, Expanders, Host Bus Adapters, and RAID storage adapters planned
- Silicon verified at 3Gb/s, end-to-end interoperability with SAS/SATA HDDs
- LSI Logic Fusion-MPT architecture and proprietary design system enable first-pass success and on-time delivery
Milpitas CALIF. , Jan. 26, 2004 Emphasizing end-to-end interoperability, LSI Logic (NYSE) today announced plans for the industrys most comprehensive Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) product plan. Based on Fusion-MPTTM (Message Passing Technology) architecture and the GflxTM/FlexStream® design system, the LSISAS1064 controller IC was delivered and functionality verified ahead of schedule. The controller and expander will enable a SAS family of Host Bus Adapters (HBAs), and RAID storage adapter products aimed at system, server, workstation and channel markets that will be available later in 2004.
Last week LSI Logic announced delivery of the industrys first single-chip SAS controller IC, the LSISAS1064, with silicon verified at 3Gb/s I/O transfer speed direct to SAS prototype drives and at 1.5 Gb/s speed to production Serial ATA (SATA) drives.
The combination of Fusion-MPT architecture and LSI Logics unique FlexStream design system and Gflx process technology provides a complete development methodology that enables first-pass silicon success to reliably meet time-to-market windows, said Dan Roehrich, director of hardware development for LSI Logic Storage Standard Products. We link all the design components common driver architecture, process technology, libraries and memories. The result is outstanding silicon, outstanding performance, a cost-effective solution and on-time delivery of silicon.
Because the SAS physical layer is compatible with SATA, users will have the choice of populating systems with SAS or SATA hard disk drives, or a combination of both. SAS technology extends SCSI interface solutions beyond Ultra320 to the next-generation Direct Attach Storage (DAS) server and workstation markets while retaining device-level backward compatibility.
LSI Logic has maintained its position as the industry-leading SCSI solution provider by pioneering in 2003 SAS/SATA disk drive interoperability, jointly testing with Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, Maxtor and Seagate Technology. The company was also first to publicly demonstrate the exchange of data between SAS prototype devices (July 2003 T10 meeting); was first to prove SAS/SATA prototype drive interoperability (October 2003 Maxtor Serial-In-A-Box Technology Symposium); and was first to show a functional SAS wide-port demonstration (with an HP system at Comdex 2003) using SAS prototype drives, production SATA drives and two SAS expander prototypes.
With SAS technology, OEMs and end customers gain greater choice and flexibility. LSI Logic SAS products will be fully compliant with the INCITS (InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards) specification, will be compliant with all SAS protocol, and will allow customer-tailored solutions to specific transactional (SAS) or archival (SATA) needs.
