LSI Logic First to Sample Fully Functional Serial Attached SCSI Host Bus Adapters

  • LSI Logic Fusion-MPT architecture and proprietary design system enable first-pass success and January 2004 delivery
  • Seagate and LSI Logic will demonstrate SAS technology at Storage Networking World

Phoenix, AZ, April 5, 2004- Emphasizing interoperability and an end-to-end product family strategy, LSI Logic (NYSE: LSI) Storage Standard Products division announced an expanded Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) product sampling program. The HBA SAS sampling extends the opportunity for system, server and workstation equipment manufacturers to test with the first fully functional SAS host bus adapter available in the market today. SAS technology extends SCSI interface solutions beyond Ultra320 allowing data-intensive applications and the Direct Attach Storage (DAS) markets to gain enhanced performance and scalability.

Because the SAS physical layer is compatible with SATA, users will have the choice of populating systems with SAS or SATA hard disk drives, or a combination of both. LSI Logic was first to market with functional SAS silicon on January 19. LSI Logic and Seagate Technology will jointly demonstrate a SAS system at the Storage Networking World tradeshow April 5-8 in Phoenix, AZ using an LSI Logic SAS3040X HBA with Fusion-MPTTM(Message Passing Technology) architecture.

Providing the industrys first true implementation of Serial Attached SCSI is a significant milestone that keeps us on schedule to deliver silicon in high production volumes later this year, said Bill Wuertz, vice president and general manager for the LSI Logic Storage Standard Products division. SAS technology delivers point-to-point, full bandwidth data transfers across all connections. This, along with SATA compatibility, results in an extremely flexible I/O solution for the marketplace.

SAS technology roadmaps call for products that will operate initially at 3Gb/s and evolve toward 24Gb/s aggregate bandwidth. LSI Logics wide port expander configuration allows for aggregation of bandwidth and Physical Layer (PHY) redundancy for failover, ideal for enterprise applications.

LSI Logic is making sample product available worldwide, and has engineering teams working in alliance with the industrys leading OEMs and hard disk drive manufacturers to advance the development of SAS technology. The controller and a SAS expander will enable a SAS family of HBAs and RAID storage adapter products for system, server, workstation and channel applications.

"Serial Attached SCSI will provide a growth path to greater addressability, lower cost scalability and high throughput performance required by future servers, workstations and storage systems," said Brian Dexheimer, Seagate executive vice president of Sales, Marketing and Customer Service. "Seagate is working closely with LSI Logic and the rest of the industry in developing the SAS interface specification into a complementary enterprise storage interface for OEM customers and IT professional users." http://www.seagate.com
LSI Logic SAS products will be fully compliant with the INCITS (InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards) specification, will be compliant with all SAS protocol, and will allow customer-tailored solutions to specific transactional (SAS) or archival (SATA) needs.
