LSI Logic Serial Attached SCSI Market Share Tops 80% Worldwide

  • First-to-market products, production volume shipments and compelling technology underscore the LSI Logic leadership position
  • Design wins achieved at HP, Fujitsu-Siemens, Dell, Sun and others as customers begin adoption of next-generation SCSI
  • SAS architecture adds to IT flexibility and choice by providing SCSI and Serial ATA connectivity

MILPITAS, Calif., September 20, 2005 - Design wins at four of the five largest server OEMs pushed LSI Logic (NYSE: LSI) Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) IC design win market share above 80%, the company announced today.   HP, Dell, Sun, and FSC have selected LSI Logic SAS products (http://www.lsilogic.com/sas).  Other OEMs including Japan market leader NEC, Chinese server maker Lenovo and Taiwan server maker ACER will also be using LSI Logic SAS products.

Revenue from the SAS design wins is expected to exceed $450 million over the next three years.  LSI Logic has also completed extensive interoperability testing with leading hard disk drive manufacturers including Seagate, Maxtor, Hitachi and Fujitsu.

"Server suppliers will begin to ship serial-attached SCSI (SAS) solutions in 2005 and 2006, and storage systems suppliers will soon follow," said Dave Reinsel, Director of Storage Research at IDC.  "Companies such as LSI Logic, which has had recent SAS design wins, will benefit as the industry moves to a SAS architecture. This architecture permits connectivity with both SAS and Serial ATA (SATA) hard disk drives, providing flexible, more cost-effective tiered-storage to IT professionals."

IDC estimates the server market will grow from 6.9M units in 2004 to 9.5M units in 2008.  One data point used to make market projections is shipment estimates for the major server market suppliers such as HP, Dell, IBM, Sun and FSC.  Together, these five vendors represented 74.7% of the worldwide server shipments in the 1st half of 2005, according to IDC, and have continued worldwide leadership in terms of server shipments since.  By 2008, IDC estimates that Serial Attached SCSI will achieve more than 30% market share in the enterprise storage and server space.

"By driving the development of new technologies and industry standards, LSI Logic enables customers to gain a time-to-market advantage with less risk and proven interoperability," said Bill Wuertz, senior vice-president and general manager of the LSI Logic Storage Components Group.  "By winning first generation SAS OEM platforms, LSI Logic is well positioned to benefit as the marketplace evolves."

SAS technology enables SCSI interface solutions beyond Ultra320 to the next-generation Direct Attach Storage (DAS) enterprise server, storage systems, and high-performance workstation markets while retaining device-level backward compatibility. The SAS standard defines a device-level enterprise storage interface incorporating SCSI command sets, serial point-to-point interconnections, dual porting, increased addressability and the ability to scale to small form factors.  Because the SAS physical layer is compatible with Serial ATA (SATA), users will have the choice of populating their systems with SAS or SATA hard disk drives, or a combination of both.

The company is now shipping production volumes of its 4- and 8-port SAS controller ICs and SASx12 expander and SAS host bus adapter cards.  All products use the Fusion-MPTTM (Message Passing Technology) architecture to speed OEM development time and increase reliability.  High-port count SAS expanders and MegaRAID® cards and RAID-on- chip (ROC) solutions are now sampling to OEMs.

LSI Logic distributes SAS, Fibre Channel, RAID and iSCSI component products worldwide and through a network of distributors and resellers in North America. In addition to supplying OEMs worldwide, LSI Logic supplies storage component products to the channel with distribution through partners such as Arrow Electronics, ASI, Bell Microproducts, Ingram-Micro, Microland and Tech Data.   At retail, LSI Logic products can be found at CDW, Frys Electronics and Newegg.com.
